Looking for Guidance
Hello there, I am 20 looking to do something with myself... My father was in construction my whole life, and I enjoyed the environment. I was wondering if I could get a more direct answer from here than I have been able to find elsewhere on the web. What do I do to start? look for apprenticeships? look for a vocational school or trade school?

Welcome to the forum! Many people will have different opinions on the subject. Personally an apprenticeship is the best way to go. I would say its worth looking up your local IBEW office and going down there and applying for one. They have awesome training, pay, and benefits. If union isn't your thing I would say look into several companies and inquire about options to get into school and do an apprenticeship through them.

If you are not interested in the union I would suggest contacting your local IEC shcools. When you register for class they will set you up with companies that belong to their chapter. Most companies have some sort of reimbursment policy for the school. The web site is http://www.ieci.org/

Hi everyone, thank you for your responses. I'm just north of Atlanta, Cobb/Marietta area.
Just to clarify, you don't always have to go through a school to get started? I had already taken a look at IEC's site. I wasn't enthused with the required college courses. I want to jump right in and learn the trade with my hands. I hope that is a possible route.

Look up some threads on here via the search option, read a bit and then decide. You will never beat the Union apprenticeship schooling and I doubt you will ever find a non union shop that pays as well and has equal benefits at no cost to you. End of story. Do your research.
