Default Some Advice?

Trying to get into the Electrician thing. I been at University for a couple years and can switch to trade school and pick up all the classes in 3-6 months. After that what do I do? The only thing I'v found is an apreticeship program that may have me waiting on a list for up to 2 years, a list I may never get a call from anyhow. Do I just look in the paper for help wanted adds? I want to make Journeyman as fast as possible, also what would be diqualifing on a background check? Been good for 5 year, didn't do anything serious.

Try getting into the Union.. it is still the best option for anyone trying to get into this trade..

It won't be easy and the wait is long.. places like North Dakota have a shortage of tradesman and it might be a better place to look for a foot in the door..

Good luck..

Default classes

should I take some classes? Continue my other degree just in case? Purchase tools now? What kind of knowledge will I need to know for the interview?

My advice would be try and get into a union. If you can right away get a couple of qualifications and try again. Some unions want experience guy and some want to mold you into an electrician. If the whole thing don't work there are plenty of electricians out there that are willing to train you. Work with them for 7 years then get your own license.

IBEW is a good career path but unfortunately the two year wait he is talking about is most likely the IBEW.

Get a newspaper, yellow pages and hit the streets.
See every contractor you can, go to their place of business and stop by large job sites.

Move?

Forget the tools.. you won't need them for a long time..

Get as many degrees as you can.. excellent math skills are VERY important when taking tests for the Union.. that is the place you want to be top dog..
