Default Wireman Hopeful from MO

Hey everyone. I'm 20 years old and finally decided I would enjoy working with my hands more than sitting behind a desk. Electrical work sounds like what I would like best (union). My uncle co-owns a company in Illinois and says that he and his partner can make it easier on me finding an apprenticeship. He says the best thing to do is go to a tech school and take some electrical courses to show that I really am interested; and hopefully I would get an apprenticeship after only applying a couple times. I guess my question would be does it sound like a good enough plan? Is there anything that would make it easier getting an apprenticeship? He said he has heard a lot of good things about Linn Tech in MO if anyone is from around here.

IMO only the top guys in each class are worth anything, so plan on being on of them and it might work out for you.

I might add, don't count on getting in the union right away and don't wait around for them.
The classes are a good idea but if I were you I would take a job with a non-union contractor and get some experience, you're not going to learn the difference between a red devil and a wago in class.

Where are you at in MO?

Oh I'm definently going to try my best.

And my uncle offered me a job during the summer, school doesn't start until next fall. He said at first I would just be working around their shop, but I ought to pick up on some stuff. I'm hoping that will be good enough for experience. I do know of an electrical company in town though, and one of my buddies actually works for them. I guess it wouldn't hurt to see if they could use any help.

And I'm from St. Clair, in between St. Louis and Rolla.

Can you work full time for you uncles company to get hands on experience in the field?

I agree classes are a good idea but I have seen a lot of young men/women just take classes. There is a huge difference between books and the field. I always feel its best if you can do both at the same time if possible.

The fact that you are young and trying to get advice and learn is extremely impressive!

Keep after and you will one day have a successful career in where ever you land!
