Default Good Solar/Wind References, Digital or Hardcopy

I'd like to tap the experts here. Last time I worked on solar was probably 6 years ago when I was an apprentice. I don't believe any of our Local's contractors are touching the stuff right now so it would be hard to get more relevant experience without working non-union.

Tips on good literature, or worthwhile classes/certs are welcome. None of my old textbooks touch on it with any length.

I'm sure you can find some industry trade journals/ periodicals on the subject if you look around. That would be a good place to start. Then e-mail an author or editor and tell them the same thing you just told us.

Got the JATC Photovoltaic Systems by Jim Dunlop for less than $30 bucks with a CD that has more info and quizzes off Ebay.

I read the 3rd edition isn't much different than the 2nd edition, but the 2nd edition is waaaaaaaaay cheaper.

Here's what you need to know:

A fairy or deity of some sort makes the sun rise. Light shines on a panel, then magic, and out comes, I don't know, batteries?

Some of the best training comes from the manufactures. But what do you want to learn? As a union electrician, you're not going to be designing systems, just turning wrenches. So how a system is put together is up to the engineering staff, not the journeymen. Anyway, webinars are a good way to go. Anything in a book became obsolete before the print dried. Check out the manufacturer's web sites.

Outback
SMA America
Solaredge
Midnite Solar

Or some of theses.

I don't want to be turning wrenches forever if I can help it. I have a bad habit of being restless with the status quo.

If that is the case I would try and find an online school to get some serious knowledge in systems design.

So much of what I do with solar is turning wrenches. Last night I didn't get home until 9:30 because I was putting in a pole mount base and the pole. This means I have my tractor backhoe, the 15 ft 6 in diameter pole, 56 bags of concrete, 6 ft 30 in diameter sona tube, 55 gal drum of water, generator, water pump, all on my trailer. Spent half the day digging, the other half setting the tube and pipe. Then 3 hours mixing concrete in the bucket and hauling it to the tube and shoveling it in. Don't get me wrong, I did get to design the system, and I'll get to mount all the equipment. But it's still mostly manual labor. This isn't the one I did yesterday, I was too tired and pushed for time to take pictures, but it's the same size.

I hope you have help when you do things like this and aren't stubborn and do it all on your own.

I'd at least have grabbed some cheap parking lot labor for the mixing and shoveling of the concrete aspect of the job.

This is the middle of no where, parking lots? You should see the road to the job site! Back to solar training, anyone that wants some hands on can follow me around for the "summer". I won't charge for training!

It must be too cold there if there aren't any parking lot hiring halls.

You can have that snow and cold, not my style.

Most of the solar I did was in snow then a wet spring on a slick rubber roof. Work was the only thing keeping us warm!

This one is full of information. It's a class on its own.
