Default Disconnect for VFD - Does it have to be within sight of VFD??

For years in industrial facilities, we have been able to disconnect a motor back at the MCC (and use LOTO) for service. We usually do this when the motors are located in Electrically classified spaces.

But also in pharmaceutical where the fewer boxes & conduits the better.

We were recently approached by a long term client about section 430.102 (A) 430.102 Location
(A) Controller. An individual disconnecting means shall be provided for each controller and shall disconnect the controller. The disconnecting means shall be located in sight from the controller location.

There is an exception in 430.102 B 2 b. to allow LOTO for industrial installations. It is not clear if this exception is for motors only or controllers also.

The exception does not apply to controllers only to motors so if the VFD is the motor controller then you must have a disconnecting means located within sight of the VFD.

What if the drive has a main disconnect and drive disconnect built in with integral OCP?

Sent from your mom's iPhone. She says hi.

If the drive has an integral disconnecting means that would qualify as the required disconnect.

Pretty good reason to use MCC buckets with drives built-in, or stick the drive in the bucket in place of the contactor.
