Default Having a brain fart.

Where is it in the code book where I can find what the smallest wire I can tap on a 50amp lighting cir? I will be using soow to feed 50 amp track light and the cord will be somewhere between 4' to 6' long.

Likely in article 400, cords.

Or maybe 240.21.

I'm also looking in 210 right now for at least until the Yankees start beating up the Phillies again.

Wait a second... a 50 amp track light?

Try 210.19 (A)(4) Exception No. 1

All the Halo Tracs I have seen are 20a max.

What brand are you using?

Not sure of the brand I will look tomorrow and let you know, but it is 50amp track. I have track light that will cover about 50,000 sq.ft. of a museum. The drawings call for #4 on a 50amp cir, but the electrical engineer let us back it down to #6 on a 50amp cir.

It sounds doable, but since 240.5 B,2 references fixture wire, I believe you would have to use one of the wire types listed in 402.3 for it to apply.
If the tracks have end feeds, I’m not sure if those wires would qualify as "fixture wires", since those are more for branch circuit wire connection… although, 402.5 does allow fixture wires to be used as branch circuit wires as permitted elsewhere in the code.
Maybe run it by your local inspector to see what he thinks.

402.12 does reference 240.5 for overcurrent protection, so it looks like you can tap a 50A branch circuit with a #12 or larger fixture wire, but the actual allowable ampacity for the #12 fixture wire is limited to 23 Amps and likewise #10 fixture wire would have an allowable ampacity of 28 Amps, according to Table 402.5.
