    Hi there,
Yeh, we are all fine, planing our winter activities already.
    We settled outside Calgary.
Just getting on a plane wont work, as to take on a sparky a firm would need a sin(social insurance number)to pay you, you cant get that unless you produce a work permit, or landed immigrant paperwork. For a work permit the firm has to get a HRDC approval, and prove that the job has been advertised in canada, with no takers.if they lay you off you have to leave the country, and start again. Yes there is a lot of work in Ab-less in Sask. There is a huge demand for labour in Fort Macmurray- but its not exactly family friendly-its a frontier town, where a home will cost $3/4M
Nova Scotia, is off the track as regards work.
ON has been hit by the ongoing recession.
I agree with the little future in blighty. Its a pain to get here but for us it was the best thing we ever did, especially for the kids.

It does all seems to be little micromarkets in the petrol stations.

    Hi Del..

Hope life is treating you well?
Sorry i havent replied sooner, didnt realize a wedding could kick'me so hard!

Now i can start the job search!!
Can i ask, what area you all decided to settle in?
Coming from the UK, usual story of...were looking for family friendly, community, good schools etc...weve been looking at ON & NS for the community side of things...im told the work is Alberta & SK?

Do you suggest get on a plane & ' go get a job'...?
As you can appreciate its a massive step to make the move but 'Blighty' holds little future for us (mostly the kids!) hence the serious look at Canada!!

Im Devon born & bred.. last trip 'up north' took us to Peterborough, just feels like everything has been built on...big towns & cities are getting taken over by Tesco & no-one has manners anymore!
    Must be my age.....

    Hi there Richey,

Sorry about the delay, a serious dose of the family visiting.

I'm originally from Leicester, I came to canada via setting up the Candian office of a uk firm, I gave them 3 years notice of leaving, and they said how about you set an office up now!!!! I was a little bit gobsmacked at the time.
PCL are a building firm, and dont have an electrical dept as such to my knowledge- I I have just come off a 5yr project with PCL.
It all depends what part off the country you want to go to. Due to the oil patch, Alberta has a very lively economy.
Based either around Calgary or Edmonton. Quebec is a nightmare to move to- they speak french primarily.
Generally with resumes in Canada, if they want you they will contact you.
You could try someone like Custom Electric, they have had a heap of uk sparkys over to them.

    Regards

    Hi Del
Thanks for your reply...where are you from originally?
Im in Devon, soon to be Mrs & 2 kids...can i ask how you started your job search?
Have just been to London Expo but it was more Auz & NZ...to many critters that bit down there!!
Have made contact with PCL who asked for resume but hav'nt heard as yet from them...
In the last 20 something years i have been lucky enough to worked full time (not much choice when self-emp) and the usual story of the UK is 'dying' around us...im lucky enough to have regular customers but have had to turn my hand to almost anything!!!
If you can give any advice id be very grateful...
    cheers
    Richy
