Power, I am going through a very similar situation. I will make it a few months and then fall off. I found the AA was not for me but in the states we have other groups like Life Ring, Refugee recovery, NA.

Personally I have found that I enjoy NA and seems to be the most helpful.

If there are days that you are pressed for time there is a website www.intherooms.com that hosts online meetings of all types.

I wish you luck and understand what you are going through.

I've sat here and typed, deleted, re-typed, deleted my story for you for about an hour. It just doesn't work online. Get in a room with the right people, you're not as different as you may think.

You're more than welcome my friend! Anyway I can help, ask.

I know what it's like to drop a bad habit cold turkey and it's rough. I focused on being around for my wife and kids and put up with the pain for weeks.

Try and keep focus on the positive and look beyond the temporary.

Remind yourself that this is about your future, day by day is going to be miserable but will get better.
Think about other things you have had to go through that you survived. You can do this too.
When you make it, we're going to have a party. Talking about parties, we hold a big one at my place every 2 or 3 years, your invited to next years.

Tim.

I would start with your doctor...he will need to evaluate your health and maybe he can give you something to help ease the symptoms of the detox.

In my late 20's living in Miami, I found myself with a problem. I will not go into detail, but it was more than just alcohol.
I went through the 28 day program and went to as many meetings as I could when I got out.
They told me I could never touch another drink for the rest of my life and the way to get through this is to take it one day at a time.

I found out quickly that was not going to work. I divorced the bitch I was married too and found/made a new life.
I also found out I was not an alcoholic that I professed I was years before.
I was able to work hard, make money and build a future for me and my family.
I still drink.
I learned that I was not what they told me I was and what I told myself I was.
Now this 12 step program works for some people, but it far from perfect.

I'm a living breathing example of a person that is supposed to be dead by now.

You were in the movie Blow.

Chances are, if someone did coke in the 80's, it was what was left over from the lines that John was tootin.

Believe it or not, I know a guy from NJ that spent 15 years in prison.
He told me that he is portrayed in that movie. Blow. He also told me he has a doctorate in psychology that he got while in prison. He works in a machine shop as a production employee. Can you get a PHD while in a NJ prison?
His old man owned a bar up there in NJ.

It was not the lines that got me. It was when I found out you can smoke that ****. That's what got me.

Good luck to you my friend. You are not alone right now and there are plenty of people that have gone through this who can help you with recovery and hold you accountable through the process.

I think that's a big step -- finding someone to help you stay accountable through this. The amount of people that do this on their own is much smaller than those who find someone to help them.

I've dealt with this on and off since my teens. Not to start a long story, but I started experimenting with drugs & alcohol in my teens. By 20 I was trying to get sober from Meth. I ended up joining the army, and It was there that I traded the drugs for alcohol. Nightly binge drinking became the norm. 4 years later, when I got out, it became overwhelming apparent that I had a monkey on my back and my life was going down the toilet quickly. I needed to change something or else....

I gave my life over to Jesus Christ and became a Christian. This was the best decision I ever made in my life. It didn't make my addictions any easier, but it brought me face to face with the questions of eternity and my purpose in life. My problems we're still there, but now I was a new man, Born-Again in Jesus Christ!

The process of recovery has been long and checkered. Drugs were easier to drop than alcohol, however, I have had several relapses over the years. Alcohol has been tough. I've gone years without a drink and then all the sudden I've started having cravings and began drinking again. I'm no one to judge anybody. It's a problem that sticks with you for life it seems.

Find a group that meets regularly and has plenty of people who have been down that road and are there to help. Get the doctor to help with the detox and then get sober! We are all cheering for you buddy!

Another quick little thing that might help you in this process: Addicts need to stay busy, otherwise they get too much time on their hands and one thing leads to another.

Exercise, working out, recreational sports teams, martial arts, running -- these are all things that are excellent at giving you an outlet and getting you in shape. Ever hear about Runners High?
