Default Guy Fawkes Night

So today is the 5th of November. In Britain we celebrate today with bonfires and fireworks.

In 1605 a man and his friends plotted to kill the King by planting gunpowder under the House of Lords. The plot was foiled and the assassination attempt was stopped.

Ever since that day on the 5th of November there are mass bonfires and fireworks. The man conspirator was called Guy Fawkes. He was arrested, tried and hanged, drawn and quartered. A pretend 'guy' is made and burnt on the bonfires all around the country. The 'guy' is the reason we call people 'guys' nowadays.

Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below,
To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
A stick and a stake
For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one,
I'll take two,
The better for me,
And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

We all have our traditions many reaching way back, who knows why some holidays stick. Is this a bank holiday? Is Guy seen as a hero?

No today is not a holiday.

He is seen as a traitor and we celebrate the fact that he failed in his attempt to kill the king.

It is my favourite time of he year. On my way to the firework shop now to load up for tonight. Cannot wait.

I like it because of the history.

On the 11/11 we remember our war dead (hence the avatar change) and I often listen tonight to the non-stop barrage of fireworks ringing in the air that sound like gun fire and think that is what it must have sounded like during the world wars.

In the USA 11/11 is Veterans Day.

My English side had a WWII Hero honored 2 years ago (i think it was 2 years) in France and the UK.

Have you been to Normandy

Only as a child on a school trip. I want to take my son there soon. Quite humbling.
