OK who can teach this old man how to do the @Cricket or @MikeFL ?

I see in some threads where that is present and it makes a hyperlink out of the text.

How do you do it?

Does it alert the member whose name it is? If so, where does that alert go?

Thanks!

@MikeFL!

OK that made links. I now know how to do that.

Now I'm guessing no alert but it allows another user to click it to reach the profile page of the member whose name it is? Is that the intent?

It is called a Mention, and the purpose is to alert someone who wouldn't normally read it.

Let's say I wanted to make fun of someone for meggering phone wires, I would mention @splatz so he can join in. He will be alerted to the mention with a link to the post.

@MikeFL

Did you see it?

Some people overused it. If you are replying to someone who is already int he thread and subscribed to it, there is no need to Mention them. It's only to bring someone in who may not have noticed the thread/post.

The forum's post editor is smart enough to look for a user name after any @ sign in your post ... you can even have spaces in the user name

@Justthecowboy won't work
@just the cowboy will work

Sorry to drag you into this Harvey

No. Where would I expect to see it?

Interestingly on this visit to the site I did my normal click on Unread Posts and saw the list, went down the list and middle clicked a few threads I wanted to read, and one of them said:

OK I read it, I checked my settings, and I have nothing checked, which if I'm understanding correctly, should mean I get the alert? How does the alert populate/ where does it appear?

So the systems presumes I'm going to click on Notifications on each visit? There's 4,000 there today and I've never clicked it once. Interesting.

OK I clicked it, went down the list and found it. Seems pretty ineffective unless I'm using it wrong.

Is there a way to make it do a popup on login?

Top left click user CP, left side menu click on "edit options", scroll to bottom & enable "likes" (under messaging & notification). This may do it.

If you are clicking on notifications in the upper right hand corner it takes you straight to your notifications depending on which one you select. You can also choose to be alerted by email if you choose to do so.

You are supposed to check your notifications every time you get a new one.

If you don't want to check some type of notification, you can turn it off. I turn off the Quote notification but I keep the Like and Mention notification on.

You have 4000 notifications? I have one and it is lighterups friend request but I leave that there so I can get back to the notifications.

You don't have to check each of them one by one. As an example, if you click on likes in the drop down menu it will take you to your likes. When you go back to the drop down again, it should show zero for likes.
