Default apprenticeship lenth question

im graduating from a kaplan next year with a certificate next year and i want to know if that will take a year off the time needed to finish my apprenticeship.
More importantly i want to know how long i will have to do the apprenticeship before becoming an official electrician working on my own or journeyman.
thanks.

Hello Chuck: Welcome aboard...

If you are from Mass you must have at least 8,000 work hours before you can sit for the exam, so if the school gives you 2,000 then you have 3 years to go.

oh ok thanks for the answer
so if i don't go through the union and do my apprenticeship with a small company or independent contractor will it require less time? i was told that an independent contractor could sign off and end my apprenticeship whenever he felt i was read. is that true? sorry for all the questions.
