Question Career Advice Needed - Getting Back In

Hello All,

I'm looking to get back into the field after a 7 year absence working in the corporate world in a marketing leadership role.

I did my apprenticeship at General Motors and got my cert through the US Dept. of Labor. I worked at GM for a few years as an electrician working on everything from robots, PLCs, VFDs, gantry systems, low voltage, high voltage, etc. My last work in the field was for a perimeter security integrator, holding a top secrete clearance, installing physical security systems for many of the nation's high value assets for banks, tech companies, bio-tech, petro-chemical, US military and gov.

Being away for 7 years, I am obviously rusty.

What suggestions would you have for returning to the electrician field after such a long layoff?

Don't be that guy that brags about what he used to know. That'll just be annoying and no one will want to work with you.

What brings you back into the trade?

Perhaps you can start by deciding what type role you are looking for, what type of work you would like to perform and what type of company would you like to work for. Then you could reach out to different companies that might offer such an opportunity. Explain your situation and ask for a position where they will allow you some time to prove yourself.

You could also call some of your former employers. I recently re-hired someone who left to form his own business 10 years ago. Now he knows what's involved and is happy to work for someone else again.

Welcome aboard!

How long were you a journeymen electrician before your hiatus?

I agree with Flyingsod, be humble and take things as they come.

Best if luck getting back in the swing.
