One union shop I worked for awhile back, the owner would always happen to be out of town on Friday when the paychecks would bounce and we couldn't get ahold of him until Monday afternoon. This happened 3 or 4 times in a 1 year period. So, yes scum exist on both sides.

Did you read your union bylaws where they describe how you are to wait on the jobsite on the clock, without working, until new checks or cash is brought to you? That's a long weekend that you wouldn't have had to wait if the men went by the rules. But instead, you guys broke conditions and let him get away with it not paying you until Monday. This is just like with the tool list, you give a little slack and they steal the entire rope.

Quote:
In the event the employee is not paid before the end of his regular eight (8) hour shift on his regular payday, the employee shall remain on waiting time at the straight time rate of pay until such pay is received.

Any Employer delivering a check for wages without sufficient funds to cover said check shall be considered as not having paid his employee and the waiting time described herein shall begin at the end of the shift that such employee received the insufficient check.

I've had friends deal with this and nothing was ever done to the contractor for whatever reason.

One such contractor that has done this several times sent an apprentice out to a job site to tell the long time employed journeymen that the shop closed, this was just 3 or 4 weeks back.

The shop closed, like in went out of business? In that situation my local would take the money out of the $25k cash bond all contractors have to provide up front and go after the owner/s of the company for the rest. There's always assets to be found.

Once those owners realize that their books are going to be scrutinized by high priced lawyers and forensic accountants, they always find a way to pay up

Yeah man, shut the doors.

My buddy had been there over 35 years and his son had been there for close to 15.

When he would tell me the way the guy treated them I'd always tell him to call his BA and I doubt he ever did.

I hear ya. And the complacency works both ways too. People complain about some union guys being slugs, but the BA's always complain that no one ever fires them, they lay them off so they get put back into the labor pool. The BA's want the bad workers fired so they have to sit in front of the E-board and after 2 times they get kicked out.

This is true. Seen that a couple times myself.

Emailed my friend to see if he has been paid yet.

Last I had heard from the sons wife is that the benefits have been listed on the paychecks as paid but they weren't paid in at all and that had been kicking back and forth for the last several months.
