Finding High Res. Conn. Underground

Sorry. I had to rename this thread from B4t n Dogpoop to above but this may be helpful to some.

Lost power from pullbox (underground) to next box (1000 ft away). We used the 61-956 Ideal to track wire. Unfortunatley, the tech said it's not great at locating high resistance connections (which is what we ultimately had). We used it to track the wire though. About 20 ft from outlet we found a signal drop right almost exactly above a pile of dogcrap. The guy in pic slammed his shovel down first and heard hollow sound. It turns out that the 61-956 found a pile of dog doo and the fiberglass jbox (which was buried under SOD b4t referral).

NOw, connection was burnt up but not source of big drop so there had to be another bad connection. We thought how are we going to find box's over 1000 ft deeper under sod? I said "HOLD ON" i'm heading to radioshak. I went and bought a metal detector and swept and detected the 2 steel bolts on fiberglass body until we found splice box with the bad connection.

The End

I hope next time the guy uses direct burial wire nuts with UF and you have to dig all day.. you deserve to work harder..:thumbup::laughing:

You guys wear white sneakers.. and they are clean.. you're not working hard enough..

those were 2 subs I use. I stopped by to loan them my 61-956 (what pro's use) to find the break on their own job. I wear redwings, no jewelry, and would never sit on ground when cutting live wires like the old timer was doing there... That's his decision
You mean those are (2) guys you pay off the books.. we are not that stupid you know..:no::)

ACtually, first I stepped in it and made it all mushy. Then he was looking for the signal to go from 0 -20ish. We measured from both sources and got a common point right dead on dog poop I swear. When he slammed back of shovel down he heard hollow and we all laugh...sure enough....

If I had the TDR in conjunction with the 61-956 my ideal tech told me that's a better way to find high resistance connections. So I'm ordering one asap
