Help - Why is it doing this?

Hello,

In one of the rooms (in 4 bedroom house), when an AM radio is held a couple of feet from the outlets, it detects a lot of static (electric field?).

That only happens in that room and nowhere else in the house. Any idea why it's doing that?

Thanks,
Ginny

besides being good for detecting EMF, AM radios are (unfortunately) also good at picking up AM band signals (duh), which means that it is up to you to determine
a) is it a wiring issue
b) is it a case that you have simply located a good antenna or point of view to relative to the source of the signal that provides greater signal or signal focusing

you need to do a polar (spherical) sweep at set distances from the alleged source, orienting the antenna at 90 degrees in the x, y, and z planes, plotting the signal strength at set distances of double, quadruple, etc. and post the results so that we can help you with an answer, Cletis

Thank you for everybody's reply.

The signal seems to nicely follow the wires from the outlet to the ceiling. Two of the outlets are like that in that room. The signal is pretty strong, even 2-3 feet from the wall.

How do I find a good electrician in Sacramento, CA? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Call a guy name Kessler. He might show up with a bunch of rabbits, but just ignore them. Also, there'a a person name YRman that sometimes is a man, and other times is a lady, who might be able to help.

Ginny,
You are likely to get this thread locked, this forum is not for homeowners it is for professional electricians so once the Admins get around to it, they will close this thread. But you will need to find a decent electrician who knows how to troubleshoot bad connections, which is likely your issue. How to find that person? No way to know. Were it me, I would go to an electrical wholesale house near you and ask the counter sales people for a recommendation. They usually know who are the clowns and who are the pros. Platt Electric supply in Sac is a good resource for you because they deal primarily in residential electrical supplies to contractors.

Good luck.

Thanks! I realized the forum was for pros, but I did not want to ask DYIers about this.
Thanks for the reference.
