Question Outdoor 120V receptacle powered by solar?

I have a customer who is purchasing a robotic lawnmower system. He has a need for an outdoor 120V receptacle in a remote location on his property. The remote location and wetlands present make getting wires there unfeasible.

Is there a clean solar solution that will power a 120V receptacle? The charger does not draw much, I think it is somewhere around 1500 watts.

1500 watts is a dedicated 15A 120V circuit. Running it for an hour would require 1500 Watt-hours of energy. In comparison, the largest M18 battery Milwaukee makes is 12 Amp-hours (which is 216 Watt-hours). So you would need the equivalent of 7 x 12 Amp-hour M18 batteries to run that charger for one hour. The solar panel needed to charge that battery bank within a reasonable amount of time would be quite large. So it doesn't sound feasible to me.

Money and logistics wise, you'd probably be better off trying to find a way to charge it with DC. It will cut out your conversion loss and depending on how this thing charges, you may not even need your own storage batteries or a charge controller

It probably has a 'smart charger' to go along with the rest of its smarts... meaning that it has to receive 120VAC power. Any attempt to work around it would blow the warranty up.

I doubt that the charger absolutely has to pull 1500 Watts -- but you'd have to check the documentation. You don't dare just guess.

I have nothing to add but, I like the idea of working robots

Although, the Roomba is nothing more than a wannabe. I thought the lawnmower would be a good idea when I saw a guy driving an RC race car in his front lawn.

It wouldn't be dangerous at all

Do you know any kids that are not lazy as fcuk that would actually put down the controller long enough to mow a lawn?

So, did you ever find out how much power you actually need?


I did something similar for the occasional operation of a couple garage door openers.


Measured the actual amp draw of the motor to determine the power requirements.


Anyway, 1500 watt inverter, with an automotive deep cycle battery and a solar battery maintainer mounted on the building gutter.

We also disconnect the inverter when not in use to reduce parasitic drain on the battery.

Bam!

You could do something similar, but you 1st need to determine the needs of the charger, then you can properly size the batteries and then the solar panel/charger.

Is this for the charger or does it need to power the mower continuously? If it's just a charger, and they are only going to use the mower once per week, it's likely that the charger will be a "trickle" type for a Lithium Ion battery and not pull a lot of current during charging. My SIL just bought a new battery powered mower with a 40V Li battery that is incredibly small for what it's capable of. The charger for it though only draws 1.35A maximum from the 120V outlet. That's not hard to get with a solar panel system. You need to know the EXACT specs before buying anything.

You could always put the charger on dual fuel gas/propane powered generator

This can be dne with a solar panel, battery and an invertor.
The charger would never pull 1700w.
That sounds like what the motor could pull
The charger would be far less
Probably 2 to 3A max
A 500 or 600w invertor would be fine,
