Default Underground wire locator/Fault finder

We do a fair amount of trenching, probably 4 or 5 times a month. I have an old school Rycom locator that has seen better days. Not only does it not have the technology and frequency options you can get now, it also needs to be calibrated. We are defiantly upgrading and I would like to hear some of your input. We are considering Metrotech. Out of all the demos we have done, it was the most money, however it seems like it does the best and the salesman guarantees his product further than any other. What has worked well for you guys and to what financial expense? Thanks.

Rycom 8879 (Now discontinued, replaced by the 8879PLS)

Although the Rycom is capable of locating cable faults with the optional GRP A-frame, I use the Progressive (Now Tempo) PE2003 for that task. Also sold under the Greenlee brand.

Yes. Instructions state it's only accurate if you use the direct-coupling method (de-energized conductors, physically & electrically connected to transmitter).

But I've found it fairly accurate using both induction methods, as well as in the 50/60 Hz mode.

I second that on the Greenberg a frame. I have one too, works well. I have a 3m locator and the a frame for that on too though I haven't tried it yet.
