Default Welder

We have a small local contractor who does some industrial work. I welded for him before, so he texted me with a question. He is setting up a service truck with a weld machine and war wagon trailer. He wanted to know what weld machine to put on it for maximum flexibility with good performance. I know his shop guys who weld and my recommendations would be slightly more than they need, but he's talking about hiring a pipefitter welder too and maybe a boilermaker. I was thinking about recommending the Miller 302 Air Pak (my first choice) or the Lincoln Air Vantage 566. Any thoughts?

Go with the Lincoln, or a Big Blue Series Air Pak. Diesel is the way to go on welders that size, the ones with the gas Kohler engines are just too noisy to listen to screaming away under load.

I think Big Blue is out of his price range. I'll recommend the Lincoln. I like the 302, but never thought much about the whining. I used it for small welds on trailer frames. Good call, thank you.
