I'm married with one kid, a 13 month old boy. I'm not self-employed but I am the soul provider for the family, this is the way I want it, Mom home with my son, the way it should be. Probably gonna have one more in the next year or so and that will be plenty.

As far as your sleep goes, forget about it, it all goes out the window, you literally become a machine, it's the only way that it's explainable. My boy did not sleep at all for at least the first three months. I mean, we were on shifts, my wife would sleep from about 6pm-midnight while I stayed with him and then she would take him all night. He eventually would fall asleep for an hour or two by about 6am. Then after that, that's how he slept, an hour or two at a time, a few times a day. That went on for months.

We tried everything. More feeding, less feeding, putting him down for naps, not putting him down for naps, letting him scream and cry, not letting him scream, driving around the neighborhood at 3am in the middle of the week, breast fed, formula fed, music boxes, lights, no lights, none of it worked, AT ALL.

Then eventually at about 10 months old he was screaming and whaling at the top of his lungs one night and just fell over! Seriously, just fell right over in his crib. We were watching it in the baby monitor. And ever since that night he's gone to bed at 6pm like clock work and sleeps straight through till about 5am. It's a beautiful thing! Naps are still a work in progress but we'll get there.

Good luck dude. Just like everyone else said, babies are super awesome, just try not to punt em' like a football when your being tested, which will be just about everyday from here on out.

Marriage is for the people who didn't take the great advice that every married guy always gave them.

Married, one boy (I guess becoming a man) 22 and one boy that will be 17 forever. Never self employed but we were fortunate enough that I had work and my wife could be home with the boys as they were growing up.

Reading the posts of new parents and also the "veterans" I only offer one observation... Don't ever, ever, take for granted the time you have with your children. Regardless of how hard they test you or how bad they may screw up you never know when your time with them might come to an end.

Not trying to be a "downer" for the thread just telling what I know.

Married, one daughter (9). Wife and I started young....21 for me and 20 for her. Don't recommend it....ever. I was not ready to be a dad or a husband, (we weren't married yet) and my wife, thank God, put up with a LOT of crap, but stuck with me.

One thing that I have always tried to keep in mind, for those of you with sub-par relationships with parent(s).... Everyone has TWO opportunities for a goodfather-child relationship. You with your dad, and you with your child. If the first doesn't go so well, PUT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE INTO THE SECOND.

Self employed, three kids wide range of ages. Lots of stories, life has been good. ( my wife is watching me type this and is monitoring all)

Actually, getting married and having the three has been the best thing ever for me. Her name is Brunhilda*, and is a real german workhorse.

(she wants to choke me now.)

Default Since we are telling stories

My daughter started kindergarten when she was 4 (birthday on Oct 30 and she was/is very bright). One day she came home from school and asked me

Vee (short for Vienna): Daddy, you told me to always tell the truth, right?

Me: Yes Vienna, you should always tell the truth.

Vee: Daddy, if I asked you a question would you tell me the truth?

Me: Yes Vienna, I will tell you the truth.

Vee: Promise?

Me: Yes, I promise.

Vee: Daddy,...... is there a Santa Claus?

(she was still 4 years old, WTF!)

LOL I feel your pain. I told my kids the same thing, I will never lie to you, may not tell you the whole answer, but will not lie.

So when in a big blue store the cashier asked if my 4 YO was waiting for santa clause, she replied (with a what are you stupid look) "there is no santa clause."
The cashier looked at me horrified and said "you're going to hell".
