Default paging solar experts

had to deal with a off grid setup today inverter was freaking out with a frequency problem
solar with generator backup ,
xantrex inverter charger , outback CC
heres were it gets strange
power goes from generator 120/240 first stop is a step down trans to 120 only , from there it goes into the inverter , out of the inverter thru a step up trans from 120volt to 120/240 , then to subpanel then to house .
i isolated the generator , voltage was good a to b 242 a to n 121 b to n 121 freq 60.8 hz , so it is fine unti the step down tranny is powered up , voltage remains steady , frequency is all over the place , saw it go as high as 147 hz , recorded by fluke 87 it seems to me the generator would be a SDS due to the transformer and should not have any other connections to the systems besides the incoming on the trans and the EGC , one thing i did notice is the neutral for the generator , the inverter and the output step up trans are all landed on the same bar , this doesnt seem correct to me , i havent seen a system set up like this before any ideas , the customers "electrician" i use the term very loosley with him claims he called xantrex and they said that was normal and from harmonic distortion , that does not sound right to me any help or ideas are appreciated

Some questions, what model of inverter. Is the freq moving around when the generator is running? My inverter is a SW4024, it has to sync to the generator when you start the generator. It will do some interesting power surges before its syncs. But once locked, it stays solid. I also have a 120/240 generator but I only use 120 to the inverter. Having transformers between the inverter and the house panel is very inefficient. I don't have 240 volt loads. What do they have that's 240?

Didn't catch the inv model
It will sync. And behave for a few then goes ape**** they have a well pump and were forced by the county to have 240 for building permit

I have a 4000 watt inverter and it will not start a 1/2 HP well pump every time. Did you try dropping loads off not just the transformer? I use a Grundfos soft start deep well pump. Maybe its a load issue not a supply issue. So it only does this with the generator running?

It does it with the gen on or off , the inv won't run the pump I didn't dig too far in. I was limited on time , I knew this cluster would require a lot of time just to
Figure out what the original Intent was. I did isolate and load up the gen and it ran fine. The only time it goes nuts is when the transformer is being fed from it

I've only been off grid for 20+ years so here's my take. Ditch the transformers, feed the place with 120 volt. Install a offgrid friendly well pump. Just getting rid of the transformers would be a quick way to see what is really going on. Then go for the well pump. An offgrid system has no use for 240 volt loads unless you are paralleling two inverters.
