Default Detached Garage - GROUNDING

Hey Guys,

Running a 100 AMP subpanel off meter box on the house.
I'm running 1/0 aluminum triplex.

Question: Do I need to run a ground with that or just pound ground rods at the garage? I'm not finding it in the code and I know it can be state specific. But can anybody help me out with NEC guidelines or an article to check out?

Thanks!

Since you're an apprentice, ask your jman. Secondly, this is considered DIY, since, this is on your own house. The mods will sort this out.
btw when are you going to test for your card?

You need a 4 wire cable and you need ground rods. Are you doing this for yourself or someone else?

Yes, which is why you need to know the exact code in the state you are working before you do anything.

If your coming off a meter base with add on lugs( before any mains) to a detached garage, isnt it ok to run a 3 wire and drive ground rods at the garage.

In that case it would be compliant. I didn't realize that was what the op was asking. I assumed a meter main

yep I assumed it was just the meter base but it could be either.
Here in our part of the country fewer and fewer on the house and a meter/panel combo at pole.As long as no other breaker spaces except main 200 amp breaker we can run a 3 wire. Weve gone back and forth on this rule so the poco changed to just a meter and a main to avoid service inspections.
I have heard rumors that a main breaker will be required on the outside of the house for 2020 NEC.I wonder if this disconnect on the pole sometimes 200 feet away will satisfy this rule?

Our code classes said that will qualify as the "emergency disconnect". Midwest Electrical Seminars
