Mounting panels on 1 5/8" strut on wall, I say the dedicated electrical space required in 110.26 (E)(F) starts at the wall to the front of the panels (includes the 1 5/8" strut). Whats your opinion?

Someone wants to put a 1 3/8" air line in across the panels at 8'6", tight to wall, says will be behind strut:mad:. . It would cause me to cut 20" off all the vertical pieces I have the 15-20 panels mounted on.

Here are some code sections.

F) Dedicated Equipment Space. All switchboards, pan-elboards, distribution boards, and motor control centers shall be located in dedicated spaces and protected from damage.

Exception: Control equipment that by its very nature or because of other rules of the Code must be adjacent to or within sight of its operating machinery shall be permitted in those locations.

(1) Indoor. Indoor installations shall comply with 110.26(F)(1)(a) through (F)(1)(d).

(a) Dedicated Electrical Space. The space equal to the width and depth of the equipment and extending from the floor to a height of 1.8 m (6 ft) above the equipment or to the structural ceiling, whichever is lower, shall be dedicated to the electrical installation. No piping, ducts, leak protec-tion apparatus, or other equipment foreign to the electrical installation shall be located in this zone.
Equipment. A general term, including material, fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires, apparatus, machinery, and the like used as a part of, or in connection with, an electri-cal installation.
Based on the definition of equipment i am going to change my opinion. Strut could be included in the mix.

That said, I think you would be am ass for forcing the issue.

You don't have to cut anything. If he thinks it is in his way, he needs to cut it. I would mount a horizontal strut across the top of the verticals for support of conduits leaving the panels. In that case, he needs to find another route. It becomes your code required means of support for the conduits and cannot be removed by him.

...he already has the SS conduit installed 4" off the wall....
How is this being supported, from the ceiling or the wall?
