It seems to be the requirement from AT&T to run 2" RMC for fiber optics.

I can understand the dia, but why not use EMT?

Customer needs a 70' run from the communications closet to their data room.
2x2 drop ceiling grid with 2' clearance above. Gonna be a bitch to try and get rigid in.

Could i just use EMT?

No. They pay for this for a reason.
Maybe one of the RCDD types here can explain but it a certain class of installation design or something like that.
Plus, you can't get into it very easy or damage it accidentally just by bumping into it.

Btw, I have used IMC under the direction of the person signing my paycheck and was not failed for it.

Security issue? It is spec in high security environments all the time. I don't personally see any diff between using emt and rigid steel for this, but apparently the military and FAA does.

Don't assume anything/everything in Telecom is spec'd for a reason - we do alot of install/design for wireless carrier (AT&T, Verizon, etc).

If I find something that looks ridiculous I question them and usually they will accommodate.

Except on grounding - Do whatever the hell the drawing says on grounding, if you question it you will only end up banging your head against a wall.

friend of mine who runs 3 office buildings got at&t to agree to an innerduct being placed in an existing 4" conduit from the basement to the 2nd floor phone room, then 3/4 smurf tube through 2" conduit into the hallway, and EMT into the suite.

Thanx for the replies. I need to speak with AT&T on this one. RMC is just gonna be way too much of a hassle. I will need to make quite a few cuts and couplings on this run since it is tight above the grid.
