I don't understand how 240 volt baseboard heat works, this also applies to electric floor heat - If I'm connecting one phase to the black wire and the other phase to the red wire in a baseboard heater (and the black and red wires are capped together at the other end of the heater) how is this not shorting out?

This may be a silly question but I'm having trouble understanding exactly HOW it works. Any responses are appreciated. Thanks!

Tom, the point is this site is for electrical professionals only, and your question is textbook DIY'er.

The "Electrical trade professionals only" requirement is made QUITE clear in the sign up page, yet lately many folks are conveniently ignoring it.

There are more than enough DIY sites out there, the admin here would like to keep those types of questions on those sites.

Even if you were an apprentice this would have been covered very early on in your training.
