Got a call about 2 weeks ago to install a light lift. Job was at least 30 minutes there, 30 back, and for a new customer that was a non-referral. I quoted a price over the phone which I rarely do. So I throw out a high number and if I get it how bad can it be? Well, I never heard back from him until today when he now needs someone to troubleshoot his light lift!

People are funny like that!

Sounds like you have a good opportunity to score a customer that will sing your praises to all his friends. Conversations will start with "I should've hired that guy in the first place.".

Or he'll bitch about the bill and mother**** you to everyone!

This is the most likely scenario. How soon he will forget that you corrected the problem, and you ripped him off because you had him over a barrel

You're blowing a great opportunity here:

You can charge full price and then some, including your travel time both ways, etc.

Get some $$$ upfront, and you'll make at least what you would have made in the 1st place without having to do the actual install!

There's no way I'm calling this guy back because this guy appreciates price before he appreciates professional service. IMO this is not the kind of customer you want to work for, ever.
While I usually agree with this, on the flip side there is a chance to make money.

If you're booked solid then F him. But today I only grossed $119 so I probably would have went if it were me.

People seem to struggle with these. I install a lot of them. One guy said we were to expensive and had his border jumpers do it. We got a call about 3 months later that his 800lb fixture fell on the hood of his Ferrari!
:) For some reason, I feel like I can now sleep peacefully tonight after reading this.
