Ok Customer has a 400 amp meter can/ with 2 200 amp breakers in it.

Customer wants to use 200 amp ATS for one of the breakers.

Two questions:
Can the ATS have a main breaker before it? if no, then how do I proceed with the meter/combo.

If yes, can I make a splice in the meter can/breaker section of the can?

I am trying to download a picture but that hasn't happened yet.

of course it can. why would you believe that it couldn't ?

Just cut in your ATS b/t the service disconnect and sub panel.

I've only seen the feeders go directly from meter to ATS.

Well, do something you haven't seen before. Think of it this way. Insert your service rated ATS in between one of the 200 breakers and the house feeder.

You could have bought a non service ATS, but it sounds like you already have this one. Read up on main bonding jumpers tho.

You will come out of the 200a breaker to feed the- line/utility/house power side of the ATS. The existing load side of the 200a breaker becomes the load for the ATS. Yes you can splice in the panel- 312.8.
