Could the question have been to see if you knew how to apply that section?
what do you mean? i had four options i edited my question at the top. maybe i missed something or didnt know about some exception or something but i didnt see anything that would have applied....

50 or 100 would apply under 'unlimited length' rules.

Without knowing the exact question, it's hard to tell what they were looking for.
just curious how would that apply is there a rule somewhere stating something to the affect of certain lengths being unlimited you know what i mean?

Perhaps the question was looking for an answer that is listed in 240.71(B)(5)(1) through (4).

Was this in an open- or closed-book section of the test?

FWIW, some test questions are written with a specific error in the NEC in mind. They know there are people out there with wrong or missing sections, and they write questions accordingly, just to make you miss the question.
i dont have that section in my 2005 code book is that some thing that should be there and yes its an open book test

You are absoloutley right i never knew this before i have nothing between 240-61 and 240-80 wait there are a lot of missing sectios like that in my book or is that the way its supposd to be.....im gonna have to look at some other peoples books... thats weird ...
OK, my bad. I typed 240.71 in my last post and I meant 240.21.
i do have that section, but the thing is reading this whole chapter i do see any other lengths other than 10 or 25 ft and this article has to contain all the tap length imfo right

How about 430.28?

240.21(B) allows for 10', 25', and unlimited outside taps. 430.28 allows taps of 100' (though not over 25' horizontally).

Depending on what state you're in and what testing company is used, there are always questions that are like this, unclear. I referred to them as " time killers" and they do just that. I remember one on my test that asked "What section of the NEC covers the installation requirements of smoke detectors"? In addition, in Ga where I took the test there were 20 questions (10 in each section) that were "test" test questions that at the end of the test were taken out!
