I have a 250 amp, 120/240 volt, single phase panel with 100 amps dedicated to resistive load (heating) at 240 volts and 40 amps to incidental loads at 120 volts. What size 240 volt compressor can I run from this load center?

That's not much of a load calc, and you don't say what size the feeders are...

With that being said I think 10 hp is gonna max you out. More details please

I was going to say if the OP did use the air compressour then I know many POCO will have a fit when someone run 10 HP air compressour on small 15 KVA transfomer { I have see it smoked out } most POCO will genrally limited to 5 HP single phase unless someone snagged triphase supply then it can be much larger.

For HVAC then Mag is right on the spot.

Merci,
Marc
