Not myself, but I have a colleague in another line of business that does. The MAIN BENEFIT to using an email service like constant contact is to keep email from your domain from being automatically black/grey listed as spam, affecting your normal business communication (which could start ending up in people's spam/junk boxes).

As the owner and operator of an email address I would sternly advise against using anything like constant contact or a "newsletter" altogether. Nobody cares and nobody wants more spam.

We use Vertical Response. I started out with Constant Contact but the monthly fees rack up even if you dont use it. If you go with Vertical Response then you only pay when you send it. Plus if you keep your eye out they will send you coupons for 1/2 off email credits. When that comes thru, take advantage of it. You can sit on the email credits until you are ready to use them.

We use the email blasts when we need work. We have a good response.

Agreed. But hopefully most people don't think of this as spam.

They would be able to opt-out if they don't want it receive it.

I have the e-mail addresses of all my past customers. My plan was to send out something 2-3 times per year with offers for services that they may not know about. Maybe even custom e-mails catered to each customer specifically.

We send out a quarterly news letter, we call it Lake update. We usually have a short article on an upcoming event ,fishing tournement info at the lake ,weather updates , then we have a special promotion like in the spring we offer dock inspections or t in the fall smoke detector checks.

A lot of our clients don't live at the lake but maintain a vacation home so an email blast keeps them updated on happenings and keeps us in front .

23 customers took us up on our inspection and smoke test. 4 clients needed replacement of outdated detectors. 2 contracted for FP panel changed. 8 were sold on our home protection plan.

When we use a promotion like a smoke detector inspection to get our foot in the door we make it very profitable by taking care of the customer.

I already know that you know how Google indexes pages like this. You really shouldn't use the word gimmick with your company name here. All someone needs to do is search your company and smoke detector inspection and they will see this post with you saying it's a gimmick.

This is why we should have private forums away from public view.

If you want, I will delete your quote out of my post.

I recently sent out an end of the year survey to our clients. It was interesting to see the responses to the "How would you like us to keep in contact with you and let you know about specials" question.....

A few don't ever contact me again!

A few, well contact you when we need you.

But out of all the social media fronts and ways to keep in contact, 80% of the respondents wanted a newsletter format over any other form of contact. We always ask if they would like to join our newsletter, and almost everyone says yes. If you ask them to follow us on social media, the answer is almost always "No"....So, I have never posted one thing on the sites.

The main benefit to social media is it's like the new form of SEO. Especially if you use Google+ and get people +1'ing your pages. Google loves their own products. Youtube too.
