I got suckered into doing a crappy house that this guy is flipping. I talked an ex employee into helping me at night. He was meeting me there last night and he went on the porch to open the door and realized they had just put about 5 gallons of paint down with no sign or anything to mark it. We get in and there is old burritos sitting on a cabinet that smell horrible. The guy wanted to supply material and was supposed to leave it there and there was nothing there. Turned out to be a chitty night and waste of time. Plus ruined the paint job and shoes.

I never get that with people wanting to supply their own material. They always have half what they need, not really what they need and atleast 1 part needs to be returned to the store because it is DOA. Now by the time I spend gathering the rest of the material and dealing with their junk, they spend more money, I am pissed and it takes longer than what it should. Just a lose for everyone involved.

I have 1 guy (notice I said 1), that I will remodel his properties and only charge him labor. Your post is exactly why I wont work for others who want to buy the materials.

And the only reason I do it with this guy is cause his work is basically fill in stuff only. He waits (complains) when I have other profitable jobs elsewhere, if he doesn't bring all my material, oh well I just charge him another hour or two. Hes got enough stuff going on that there is always something to do on one of his properties if I have some free time. And , he always pays. :)

no, you are doing it wrong. you charge hourly labor on those jobs, and you put in your contract all those things you brought up and how you WILL charge for that time. its a money maker.

basically: if the customer insists on shooting themselves in the foot - let em. You cant fix stupid, but you can make it pay.

The idiots that want to supply their own material are not as bad as the idiot electricians who agree to it. When people suggested it to me i would simply tell them I'am to particular about the products I use.
