Restaraunt? Looks nice. I'll be down next week to help out. Put some sheets on your couch for me.

My guys have done a very good job. We have gotten the entire place framed, all the conduit ran, all the disconnects mounted, and all the walls roughed in with 4 people in 40 hours. Not bad since I was perched in the van most of the time doing other bids.

I have some more photos when I have time later to upload them. This is it the final day on the job after about 200 change orders, 3 fights with suppliers for doors, and my foreman wanting to quit 10 times. All that is left is breaking down the 1200 Amp main breaker and doing a field install of a shunt. Then panel schedules and walking away with our check. We waited to finish until the Poco decided to swap transformers that way we could knock out the shunt trip install on a dead 1200 Amp breaker. The inspector kept telling me he wanted it in before the transformer was changed. I kept asking him if he was nuts. I said lets see live 1200 Amps or dead 1200 Amps. I choose dead. He finally understood after 3 days of arguing with him.

2 things - i'm guessing this is the shunt install that is the impetus for the Urgent Help thread...

and B- what difference is amps...what's the volts?

Yeah, come to mention it... why are we shunt tripping restaraunt panels? I know the ANSUL has to drop out the under-hood equipment, and some people do that with a shunt trip main in a little "under hood equipment panel"

MD - don't know...we are only required to shunt elevators around here...Hoods all have micros in the ansul system...what do they want a shunt for?

and again, am i missing something...what difference is amperage? i'm more inclined to worry about voltage...

Because the Inspector will not let it pass until the shunt trips are functional to disable both panels. It still isn't working at the moment.
I guesss the question was more specific, and maybe you're not the one to ask. Why does he want them at all?

You can do it any way you want, but there is a mechanical code requirement to kill power to all electrical items under a hood when the ANSUL shoots off, and to also turn off the make-up air (if any). You'd use the micro switch in the ansul to either trigger the shunt trip, or drop out a large contactor. Whatever suits you.

That's what I'm still wondering. I'm pretty sure they're not dealing with 480, so there's probably no GFPE issue. I forgot that this was a restaraunt. The shunt trip for the whole panel thing has me puzzled, and doing it with break glass operators is more how you'd do a wood shop or machine shop. I can see if they wanted the sprinkler system to dump the mains, but that's not what they're doing here. Weird.

Because anytime there is more than one main service coming into a building, they require shunts and emergency off switches on each panel that will kill both at once. These panels are 100ft apart. One in the existing restaurant and the new one in the electrical room in the addition that was just built.

That make more sense?

Ah, yes. They're being generous in that case, by letting you do that. They could have just as easily required you to have both service disco's side-by-side.
