Helping a friend wire up his 3 car detached garage and he fail inspection today.

First, panel too far from ufer ground!
Panel is on one side of garage and the ufer is on the other side, 30 ' away.

Any problem with that?

60 amp breaker feeding 100 amp main.

Gc was present for inspection and called him.
Inspector left his card and the paperwork.

Any code issues with this two items?

The grounding electrode may be an issue because it's not 'as close as practicable' to the service disconnect, but I'm not sure if that requirement is actually anywhere in Article 250.

The 100A fed from the 60A should be fine as long as the feeder is sized for 60A.

Copper, I assume? There is nothing wrong with that. The 100A MCB in the sub-panel is simply acting as a disconnect, not an OCPD. The panel could be MLO with 100A or 225A bussing also, and there's no violation with that, either.

FWIW, I know of no distance limitation for a GEC.

And it sounds as if the feeder is good also.

Did the inspector cite any code sections?

jb, what's the diff. when they make you guys run an EGC to timbuktoo to hit the water pipe?

Secondly, this inspector has dyslexia when it comes to downstream panels and feeders.

i call BS. His paperwork should have listed specific code articles for the fail.(beat ya to it, Ken.)

This could be where he's coming from on the GEC:

250.30(A)(4) Grounding Electrode. The grounding electrode shall be as near as practicable to, and preferably in the same area as, the grounding electrode conductor connection to the system.

I told him as far a I knew, no violations existed, but I wanted to make sure.

Since he as the homeowner did the work, how should he approach the inspector without seeming to be a ****?

Ok, here is the deal.

1-#6 wire is not rated for 100 amps.
2-Needed to see breaker feeding panel.
3-Needed grounding rod on same side of garage as panel. Ground wire needs to be minimum#6 solid awg.

Right now we have #10 running from panel to ufer.

Do we need #6?
! know we do not need the rod, but may put it in anyway.

Yeah, he just needed to verify the OCD ahead of the feeder.

Table 250.66 gives #8 cu minimum for a GEC. (get rid of the 10)

i'm not aware of the requirement to have a rod, if your electrode is a ufer.

Maybe the rod and #6 is a local amend.? (doubt it tho)

Remove the wire to the ufer, install a ground rod and use the #10 from the panel to the rod.

Make sure to use a 60 amp breaker to feed the garage with.

I agree, but the inspector was worried about the length of wire in case of a lightning strike!

As least he didn't say anything about tripping breakers.:jester:
