I was wondering if any of you out there with large extended families are expected to do all electrical work for those families for free or "gas money", I had 2 of my cousins want me to wire their $200,000 homes for free or "show" them how to do it and maybe come around at the end and inspect it for them, the one relative is a carpenter and i told him if he would use free labor to build me a house, iwould wire his for free, he was offended , he actually thinks i should do it for free.

That's asking too much beyond hanging a few luminaires.
Tell me about it, they think nothing of asking me to do this , but they feel they are to valuable to do the same
Tell Them You Will Work them into your Jammed weekend scheldule
I always have someone wanting me to do work for free. I charge family a discounted rate $45/hr instead of $65 I think thats a pretty good deal but I do almost zero residential anyways.
Full price or free. Nothing in between

If they are doing a real job they have to hire some EC why pay less to get an EC they can whine about to the family for 20 years if not happy for WHATEVER reason.
I gave my stepgirl and future son in law, sunday afternoon, kitchen rewire. My wife's side. What a crook the H.I. was .Corrosion growing off the main breaker, insulation hung upsidedown,ect....
For my kid's (grown), it's all free, even materials, and the best of everything. The feeling I get is better than pay.

Everyone else pays cash.
My mom and wife's mother and father get anything they need done for free. My sister/brother-in-law pay for eveything, beside they have all the money and all the headaches.
Oh Boy!!!

DAD, Always FREE. Biggest damn complainer I ever met.
Threatend to charge...Never complains. He loves me again.

Mother inlaw, love to help. 1 hour away (thats good). "Make a list, i'll see ya soon"

Ex-Wife Wh&t A :censored: , Mother of my child, I would do it all. Now She's re-married. NOTHING> Unless it's for my son (handicapped and special requirements for his equipment), Aside from that, I'll have my "husband inlaw" do it. He won't, so I charge (extra).

The rest of the family, full price.
Asked once, "what do you do?" I said "electrician", One thought I said "mortitian",(I Ran with it) They don't want my services now!!:whistling2:

I worked with a guy who told people he made cuckoo clocks for a living. Nobody bothered him.

I have a small family and will do minor stuff for free. They are always grateful and almost always offer to pay me.
If you can't expect your family to pay full price, how do you expect to get total strangers to?
My family says " I'm not looking for a discount I just want the job done I'll pay you $20 an HR".I can't even put my big toe in there house for that much. I usually tell them I'm to busy unless a close relative like mom Or Bro.My mom always trys to pay me and won't take no for an answer, so I just take the money, then get a gift card and send it to her.
That'll fix her.

My philosophy,exactly.
If I worked free for family, I would have full time unpaid career. I take care of a select few. The rest I'm too busy for.
Case by case. Most insist on paying. My son's 3500 square foot new house was kind of fun. His father in law is an electrician, best friend is an electrician, and his wife's cousin is an electrician. It didn't take the four of us long to wire that house. And it's an electrical show case. The inspector thought it was a hoot.
I don't ever charge family for anything. We all help each other out in different ways, that's what family is for. I'm not wiring up entire houses or additions, just small stuff. Add recessed lights, bath fans, outlets, swap out fixtures. I pay for the wire they pay for everything else. They always offer to pay but we normally settle on dinner.
It is either free or not at all. Though wife's family live in England and mine are in Florida, New York, Massaschuttes and Washington State.

I have done minor stuff for family when on vacation and always want to help but for cousins a project this big seems a stretch.
