I have a migraine. The point may be moot as the guy I was going to hire showed up 2 hours late on Monday and left 2 hours later, then called in sick this morning about :20 late

But lets just hypothetically suppose that I can find someone that will show up to work. I have workers comp and I understand they just ask for my payroll reccords and bill me accordingly. Now about the withholding, I spent a ****load of money on QB contractors edition, most of which I don't understand or use. Can I use it to do my withholding and make checks and all that stuff I don't understand and should probably hire an accountant do do for me but it sounds like a big hassle to deal with every week?

Hire an accountant to do your payroll unless you've got the time etc. All I have to do is email the hours to the accountant and she email me the form with the amount I need to pay. She handles all the IRS stuff etc. Doesn't cost that much either.

I use adp payroll service for workman's comp and all fed and state taxes are paid automatically for my lazy self. What I like is WC is taken out weekly as to what you make so the audits are pretty much nil.
40 bucks a week is cheap compared to the late fees i was getting hit with or the end of the year 800 WC bill, fired 3 accts and went this way.
If you can find a good acct though it is way cheaper

You can do your pay role on QB and it is not bad for one or two employees. You will need to turn on pay role to get updates on tax tables. You set up the employee in the add employees. once you have your employee set up then just enter their time and QB does the rest .
How much is it to turn on QB's payroll services?

A little insight to the time sheet portion. My boss always does timesheets every Wednesday as does everyone else in the world that uses QuickBooks. This "traffic" slows down INTUIT to a crawl and he usually spends the ENTIRE DAY screwing with it verifying they received all the data.

Another thing, your accountant should know the tax tables and assist you with their knowledge. That's why they are an accountant. For example, the state of Oklahoma's withholding tax formula table is not accurate as it relates to their income tax. Every year we have had to shell out more to satisfy Oklahoma's income tax. Something like this will not be picked up on by Intuit. Your accountant can help with this by advising you how much to add to the W-4 formula per month.

Oh yeah, as to your employee, fire the sumbitch. It really appears he doesn't want the job. Hell, he's probably interviewing with someone else after he calls in sick with you.

Yeah QB works pretty well for me. Hate to admit it but pick up the QB for dummies at a used book store or online. There is a lot of stuff you can do on there that is helpful if you learn it. As for the employee fire him!

He's gone.

I have been fired countless times in my life and don't recall much about any of them. I had fired one person about 20 years ago and I remember that with day with excruciating detail, today was not much better. It seems I am just a big softie.

Why are you sad and/or pained over the decision? The cat obviously did not have your or his best interest in mind.
