Customer had smoke marks on the wall below the floor warming stat. Stat was in GFCI mode. Cut open the drywall and I could see a broken conductor end sticking out of the insulation in the floor warming lead. Cut it open (it was a melted mess) and suspect it was the factory transition splice from cold lead to heating cable. There was a butt splice attached to the ground braid that fell off while I was working on it. The red and black conductors were broken at the hot spot. I suspect the butt splices for the red and black are further down where they are inaccessible without removing tile.
Any idea what could have caused this? I think I need to phone EasyHeat. I need a new section of cold lead and will likely have to make a repair in the floor.
