I don't understand the different sizes of hammer drills, I'm looking at some bosch sds max hammer drills but there are so many sizes, what do they mean?
Example 1 1/8" and 2"

Recommend max drilling size. 2in sds will drill a 2in hole max with a normal bit. You can also use sds core bits but the sizes aren't usually listed on the tool.

. That number ( 1 1/8" , etc . ) is the largest solid bit rated for these tools . I've never tested this theory with a lot of holes , but have definitely successfully drilled holes larger than the rating of the machine itself . For an sds max to spline drive , I wouldn't go smaller than 1 1/2" . An 1 1/2" Bosch or hilti will drill holes and drive ground rods all day long , with no issues .
