I never understood why employers do a credit check, so what if I'm in debt what do you care lol
It actually was never a concern of employers until background check companies started lobbying Congress for laws to make it legal for an employer to check credit records for employment purposes. Then, these background check companies sold big companies on why they should use a credit check to disqualify employees. As more and more big companies believed that they should be doing this, smaller and smaller companies followed suit.

It is a big factor why the economy is the way that it is. There are 6 million jobs in the United States that have went unfilled in the last 3 months. It is because of these background checks. Companies want the perfect hire for every position. It will only get more prevalent as time passes like it has in the past.

This thread is fail. To the OP, the industry generally does background checks. Most of the guys I've worked for never gave 1/10th of a crap as long as you can get it done. If the job posting your looking at says they'll do one, they probably won't anyway. It's the if something in your interview flags their suspicion check.

As far as credit checks go I believe the idea behind it is if the person is having financial problems they are a greater risk for theft, especially in a management position, that may have access to company funds.
I've seen people working every day and still steal from their bosses. Credit checks are worthless unless you are trying to sell someone a piano.

I know our company does at minimum a drug test, tobacco test, personality test, and the Wonderlic. Verification of license is also required for electricians.

I'm skeptical how often they really do check references; and I'd say I think we also do a criminal history check, but then I see some of the folks we hire...
