I'm an electrical contractor from Michigan and I'm just curious what the people are charging an hour in this area and around the country per hour for t&m and also service.

You'll get a lot of answers to that question and some may even be useful.

The really useful thing to do is a thorough assessment* of what ALL of your operating costs are and any categories where you may not have a cost (health insurance, retirement funding, truck purchase, etc) you need to plug in a realistic number as if you did have those things.

When you have your total true and actual costs be honest with yourself about how many hours you are able to bill for each year/month/week and do the basic division to find YOUR cost per hour.

After you recover from seeing what your basic costs really are, then add in how much profit you want on top of recovering all the costs; and do the /hour division again.

Once you have the basic paperwork in order to accumulate the numbers above and this rough idea of your operation take the whole mess to your accountant to discuss what are reasonable options to either cut costs or increase sales at the rate you NEED to charge to recover your costs.

* A retired lady book keeper or a college accounting student could be useful for this work and not cost too much.

makes a huge difference exactly where you are at. The west side of the state tends to be lower scale than the east side.
thanks guys for the insight, i'm near grand rapids and am aware that prices can vary greatly from here to detroit
Anyone from the Tennessee, in particular Middle Tennessee area, that would like to comment on hourly rates for us. I'm still trying to figure out what would be a decent hourly for T&M jobs.
What you charge is what the wages and actual overhead cost, then add what the profit needs to be. It doesn't matter what the other guys charge because their costs are different.

If you feel the profit is a variable number, see how much the money you have in the business would make in a reasonable investment. If it's more than the profit either raise your price or sell out and go to work for someone else because at that point you're working for wages, and that's the LAST reason to be working for yourself.
Here's a calculator for plumbing hourly rates but it's good for electrical too. I'm sure it's been posted on this site before...

I have never called around to see what the other guy charges, I am curious, but who cares, I know what I need to charge. I keep lots of notes and records to keep my estimating sharp, even on one hour service calls, I track it.

Where are you located? I'm in Pulaski. Good to see more TN. folks on the forum....
I live in Tullahoma, Knothole, and work the Coffee County and surrounding area.
Service rate $125.00 per/hour portal to portal
hey knothole,

do you guys pronounce Pulaski as Pulas-kee (long E) or Pulas- keye (long I).

It's a long debate up in Indiana as to the correct pronunciation.
Pulaski with a long e is the only way I've ever heard it pronounced in my part of Indiana. Just like the Polish General it is named after.

just listen to the news in South Bend. They all pronounce it "I"

Let me find the article that explains why the folks in Pulask-I county pronounce it that way.

I'm a 'lock myself and get my feathers ruffled ever time I hear the news folks call it Pulask -I

When I was stationed in the carolinas while on active duty I used to crindge everytime I was asked if I was
eye-talion.
nap, I'd like to read that article. I have a Pulaski tool I use on the job now and then. Who here(without googling)knows what that is?
We have Hoosiers who are pronunciation challenged. Several in my family refer to the next state west of us as Illi-noise and a state north of us as Westconsin. (spellcheck loved that one)

It's a digging axe right?
Yup. Great for clearing brush and roots. Invented by a smokejumper named Pulaski.
