"Yes that is the best price, but I can offer you different options for the work."

I'm there to make a buck. They are there to get the best work for a given amount of money. I see no shame in a customer asking. Why people get upset at that question makes no sense to me.
In cases like that, we'll provide different quotes for different job scopes.

Do you simply say "Yes" or do you smart off and ask them if they want to hear a worse price? I just don't understand the logic of this question.
do you pay full price for everything? I ask for a best price all the time I am not offended if they say no and if they give me a better deal it was worth asking. Now when someone gives me a smart off answer I say thank you and leave. If you lack customer service skills before the sale how will you be after the sale.

I always negotiate with my Indian customers they all get the 10 % off that I added to their bill.

I explain that we flat rate price jobs based off of the material and labor it will require to complete the installation. I tell them that the price to complete the job is firm and we do not inflate it so that we can negotiate later like other contractors do.

I do NOT get mad when people ask for a better price, the same way that I don't expect other people to get mad at me when I do it. Negotiation is part of many businesses, none of you go to a car dealer and pay sticker, you demand a better price. If you are going to get mad, get mad at the other tradesmen who brought negotiation into this business.

Great post, no better way to say it. They may be hungry for a steak but can only afford a soft taco. Better to sell them a soft taco and make a little money than play hardball over the steak.

I see it from both sides. It does irritate me a little like when people say dumb s like "your a contractor your price on materials is lower than mine" yea like I'm gonna pass my trade discount to some tightwad.
But on the other hand part of me believes there is always room to negotiate. But the other side of me just threw the "negotiator side" into the snow here with no coat or boots....

I always tell them that that's the best price we can give for the scope of work and if they would like a lower price we would need to remove some things from the scope of work
how many options is there to install a plug fed off of one 5 foot away?

seriously, i don't get upset at that question, i think its stupid for them even to ask. did they think i gave them the price to do the job? or did they think i gave them a price to start negotiating from? imo, i just doesn't make sense.

Why doesn't it make sense?

When you see the price on the sticker in a vehicle's window, why do you go and tell the salesman you want to pay less?

Why do you go to the supply house and sign up with them and ask for a discount?

"i think its stupid for them even to ask."
It's only stupid for them to ask if they never get a discount after asking. But we all know that they most likely often get a discount, so that makes it smart to ask.
