interested in electrician career , where to start?

Hi I am 26 year old, GED grad still living with parents. I am really in need of a career. I have been interested in the electrician trade for awhile. I am wondering where to start and what to expect. I do work a night job in a restaurant so my days are open. Is the electrician field good to get into in california? I am hoping if I decide to move forward with this, that i can land a good job before Im 30, and be able to support myself. If anyone has experience or tips for me, I would really appreciate it.
