What do you write on your invoice? Do you do complete break down of the job ex. Labor, material, tax,etc... or just the total? Also, what is a good invoice template you recommend?

I use a quickbooks template. I list each specific job as a line item. The fist entery is what type of work it is capital improvement or repair. Then quantity, what the specific job is like-
Install 8 recessed lights in living room with one new dimmer switch. Price per unit, then total price.

Do you guys put payment due dates?
Sure do. C.O.D.

Residential: C.O.D. on service calls. One or more day jobs are usually 1/2 down, balance due on completion. We "don't leave home without it".

Commercial: C.O.D. on service calls either collected in advance for a new account (cc) or is collected by the electrician when service is rendered. Payment terms are understood and agreed to before the electrician is dispatched. Once a commercial account has established a history of paying we will consider 30 day billing if they ask for it, but rarely. We have less then a dozen we extend terms to. They are "no more service" if their account goes into the 31st day.

We have dozens of long time commercial accounts that pay C.O.D.

We lose tons of commercial work because we do not extend terms. Who cares? I'm not a bank.

True hardship cases and long time customers in a cash crunch: We do whatever we need to take care of them.
