No. It's just a transformer. No different that if you open a main breaker in a service, it doesn't damage the utility transformer does it?

Your responses are exactly what I thought, however last week I installed an isolator in front of an autotransformer and upon attempting to run the circuit with no load the transformer released the magic smoke.

Motor worked DOL perfectly fine (bumped via contactor) so there was no shorts / cable issues. I was leaning towards coincidence anyhow.
