Labor laws

Here is the scenerio; I typically work through my lunch, I always have, my company is letting me sit home for the day tomorrow because I won't take a lunch. I don't work 9 hours or ask for overtime. I just think it is a waste of my time to sit there knowing I have work that needs to be done. I just work get it done and go home. The law says they have to give me breaks and lunches but there isn't any law that says I have to take them. As long as I have plenty of water to stay hydrated I'm happy. Keep in mind I do alot of service calls and bucket truck work so I'm usually by myself all day. When I'm on a construction site the only way I know it is quiting time is when other trades are packing up for the day.

I'm used to working for myself and if I wasn't working I wasn't making money. I guess I need to slow down and watch the clock but that is not my nature. I show up to work ready to work not worry about what time lunch is.

I just think it is childish what they are doing but oh well I'm going fishing tomorrow.

Vent complete.

SOUNDS like you are management material at the verry least and your coworkers and or your boss are scared of you fu-k them, I had similar problems when I started .what kinda click is in place where you work? Is it a union shop? If they are trying to hold you back start looking for another job or get your own thing going.
sounds like you need a reality check.

Unless you are the boss, you follow the rules put in place by the boss.

Just so you know the real truth; Florida does not require lunches or breaks for an adult employee. A compnay can enforce whatever work rules regarding those items as desired and they can require you to work whatever hours they want to.

If you do not like it, find another employer. It sounds like you hae a real attitude problem and believe you should be running the show. The truth is, you aren;t so youplay by their rules or leave.

If you don't want to eat lunch, why not bring a book and read or something? If you work through lunch and are on the job for over eight a day, you are putting your employer in a bad spot.
NAP,
It is not an attitude problem and Florida does have laws regarding breaks and lunches it is about getting the work done. I know because I used to run my own business. My problem is I don't like to quit when I'm working, I get into a "zone" and loose track of time. I personally think they are worried about lawsuits in the future.

It is just the military in me, if there is work to be done, do it.

Come on man, this is ridiculous. Reality check? Just because a man doesn't want to take a lunch and work doesn't mean he has an attitude problem. Should he follow company rules? Sure he should, those are there rules and it's up to him to decide weather or not he wants to work for that company and abide by them. But working through lunch is not an attitude problem it's called a gotta get it done wen it's gotta be done good work ethic.

His thoughts about not taking a lunch aren't his sideways way of saying that he should be running the show. Crazy talk. He's putting the company's goals ahead of his own free time!

show me the laws. I can find you a dozen sites that say there isn;t.

try this one. It does not provide the law because there isn't one. You cannot prove a negative.

the first two are info provided by the fed. Florida follows fed law for these purposes.

Show me something to support your mistaken (wrong) information.

he is arguing with the boss. That is the reality. He is NOT the boss but believes he should be able to make the rules and is here bitching about setting home for a day because he did not follow company rules. Yes, that IS an attitude problem.

If he wants to make the rules, he should go and open his own business. If he works for somebody else, he follows their rules.

and yes, he is putting his goals ahead of the companies. He wants to go home a hald hour early rather than taking the lunch. It is not his decision.
If he is really in the zone, and just likes to work if the work is there, than I have a job for him. His company should take full advantage of his abnormal need to get stuff done. I say abnormal because alot of people would rather take their lunch dreak , along with various coffee breaks. And im sure that these breaks are stretche das long as possible for some.
Many people like to work through and leave early. This presents a number of problems:

-you're not on the job for the last 1/2 hour someone might expect you to be.
-if nobody is there to see, you could be taking lunch and just claiming you worked through.
HEY GREG!

I'm waiting for those labor laws that require a lunch or a break. Found them yet?

ralph,
In Gregs situation, apparently they insist he takes a lunch break. Why? I have no idea but they do and that is what he needs to be doing rather than bitching about it.

Now, if he wants to make things better, he should take the time and talk with the boss about why he would rather not take a lunch. Maybe the boss will agree, maybe not, but regardless, it is up to the boss to make the call, not Greg.

They might even provide Greg with a reason they want him to take the lunch break. Greg simply wants to make the rules and sounds unwilling to do what his boss requires him to do. You go ahead and take him. I see a lot of trouble in Gregs future.

And that never happens in the real world.
I take my lunch at the end of the day and leave a half hour early just like the rest of the crew. I prefer 6 to 2 because I have the rest of the day to mess around after work.

I agree, once it's summer that is the way I like to work it. Early in and early out.
If I was Gregs boss,I would find out what he was smoking, and give it to the rest of my guys. We would make lots of money !!
Just kidding. I guess the other side of the story is needed. His boss isnt nessasarily in the wrong
Okay NAP I misunderstood the laws they are provisioons for minors. Go ahead and say it. As far as having troulbe in my future I doubt it. I'm 40yrs old and been a sparky for 20 years and never had any problems. I haven't had a chance to sit down with the decision maker aka V.P. of the company to hear her side. I'm guessing it is related to money and overtime. As soon as I do I will let you know her reasoning.

Ralph,

I smoke Marlboro reds and drink the green gatoraid.

Random, if you read this even with the smoking my S.A.C. rate when diving is .4/atmos/min
thanks Greg. You returning and posting that gives me new hope about you. Many would simply not bother.

So, now that that is out of the way, I see you have taken another suggestion of mine as well. I'm not trying to be a hard ass about it. I merely stated what I saw. One problem I see with guys that have owned their own businessess is they have a hard time following somebody elses rules. It's a natural thing as you have had to make all the decisions before and all you are really doing is using that mentality and trying to improve your job.

You have to be willing to let your boss be the boss. It's just that simple. You never know, maybe somebody screwed them royally by "skipping" lunches and leaving early and they are very careful about it. Only way to find out is talk with them.

Like I said, they may not actually have a problem with it once they understand how you feel about it but just the same, they may have their justifications for it as well.

COMMUNICATION

that solves so many of our problems yet it is one of the most ignored methods of preventing problems.

Holy crap man, get off your horse. Who really cares if you have "hope" about him? And what reason would there be not for you oh mighty to not have hope for him? Thank the Lord that he took "another suggestion" of yours, if he didn't we might all be doomed.

Greg, your company should be lucky to have an employee as dedicated as you.

I might've missed something, but I don't recall Greg saying anything about leaving half an hour early.

If anything, it sounds like he would keep working if nobody told him to stop, which is a completely different issue in itself.

YAAFM

he was enough of a man to admit he was wrong and I believe that deserved acknowledgment. Again gilbequick , you make the lame assumption that Gregs boss should accept an employee not following their direction. They don;t want him to do what he did and it cost him a days pay.

Dedication. You need to look it up gilbedumb. Ah, nevermind. Here is a definition of dedication:

dedication
n 1: complete and wholehearted fidelity
So now, we need to look up fidelity for you:

fi·del·i·ty 1. Faithfulness to obligations, duties, or observances.
So, for Greg to be dedicated, he must be faithful in his obligations. The boss obliges him to take a lunch. Ergo, for Greg to be dedicated to his boss, he must take a lunch break.
