for that particular manufacturer, it appears that conduit is required (per their instructions). http://radiantfloorwarming.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DS6059_installguide1.pdf I just installed one from a different manufacturer that said you could put the cables in wall for renovations, but needed conduits for new installations (? go figure).

After I posted this, I found an install video that shows exactly what you're saying with the wires being snaked up the wall. For a new installation they're saying 3/4" for the feed and 1/2" for the sensor. ???

The last 7-8 feet of that is a different cable then the element itself, I think they call it a cold lead or something , but I always snake it in the wall

FWIW, I spoke to tech support at Laticrete and they said the conduit is shown for areas that may require it by code. It would have been clearer if they noted that some areas may require conduit. I think the same company must do the instructions for Laticrete and IKEA.

For hollow walls, I just cut a chunk out of the 2 X 4 bottom plate and put in a pull string. For insulated walls I sometimes put in smurf tubes with a 4 X 4 box and plaster ring.

Doesn't the sensor wire stay outside the box? How does that work with the 4x4 and plaster ring?

Nope. Both the sensor wire and cold leads terminate on the stat. I either use a handy box or a 4 X 4.

Per order of manufacturing specifications, the one that I installed had a metal shield that was designed to be run in the wall from the mat to the t-stat. I sure Im wrong though....

Nope. Both the sensor wire and cold leads terminate on the stat. I either use a handy box or a 4 X 4.

The opening in the back of the t-stat base looks like it's below the box so the sensor wire would come out just below the bottom of the box and feed into the base. What do you think?

Looks like a run of the mill floor warming stat. I would run the sensor wires into your box.
