I'm so frustrated with my employees. Takes them twice as long to complete a job as me and my apprentice, with half the brains (that's a compliment) constantly asking how to do something then when I explain they almost don't believe me.

I'm in the Toronto area, is there any website I can find electricians? I seem to only be able to find 1-3 year apprentices which I don't have time to train, I'm growing fast and need "talented" electricians and I'm will to pay them very well if they can handle their own ****. Seems like everyone is a robot and needs step by step instructions to get a task done properly and it's take way too long.

Any advise?

Well the apprentice is good because he is working with the boss.

You're okay because you have a vested interest in the company.

Everyone else is taking home a pay cheque.

If you get lucky you can find a couple of overachievers like some hockey or football teams do.

Weird thought here that I'm often amazed at -

Some guys seem to get rich hiring nothing but drunks & crack heads. They pay them low, drive them like slaves, and yet these guys are loyal like dogs to their master.

Some guys treat others the way they like to be treated, and yet they find their employees to be full of problems and ungrateful like teenagers.

Having employees seems to be similar to raising kids. They are much better behaved when they are corrected regularly.

I would take a good look at yourself and your management style. Typically when all of the employees are "helpless morons" there is a problem at the top.

Management is about getting the best out of your people, not competing with them and looking down on them.

I manage between 6 and 12 guys per project, usually on a Friday just after lunch I'll give the impression that they can have the rest of the day off when I say " who wants to go home?". What I'm really doing is finding out who's hungry and wants to work, these are almost always solid we'll rounded guys. For the guys who leave I contact over the weekend let them go.
