For one, the only think illegal is the nm going to the receptacle. As long as the feeder cable is more than 1.25" from the furring then it is not a code issue unless it is sticking out past the sheetrock.

I have a ton of that sh**t. If the OP was in my area I'd leave some outside my shop for him.You can buy the stuff that the utilities buy to protect cables on the pole, ask for U-Guard, like a piece of EMT ripped in half but with screw down flanges so it's easy to install.
