It is my understanding that outside North America most countries rely on 220-240volt systems and have branch wiring intended to carry less than 15amps of current but what sizes are most common? I'm just guessing wildly that in the US the most common branch wiring size is 14awg, but what about places elsewhere? 1.5mm, 2.5mm?

I'm willing to bet that they don't go smaller than 14 elsewhere.

I know they go over 15 amps in Britain with a 32 amp ring main. 16 amps is the common else where with 10 amps on others.

Instead of 15 A branch circuit for lighting and 14 AWG wires, they install 10 A branch circuit and 1.5 mm (cross section area) that it is a little larger than 16 AWG . For feeding receptacles, they have 16 A circuit breakers and 2.5 mm (cross section area) wires

What gauge does 2.5mm translate to?
Little larger than #14 AWG.

By the way 1.5mm is little larger than #16 AWG.

In France the 1.5mm is used on lighting circuits.

The 2.5 is common for receptale and genral useage.

Btw the ampacity on 1.5 mm is 10 amp while the 2.5 mm useally 16 amp unless have speical rating then it can bump up to 20amp but never over 20 amp but we do have common 4.0 mm which it little larger than #12 AWG and that can use either 20 or 24 amp rating OCPD.

Merci,
Marc
