Good afternoon All,

I've booked myself for the first year Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities exemption exam. It's booked for the 6th of February.

I've been a registered apprentice for 3 years (but have 6 years of hours in reality).

Is there anything I need to know about going into this exam?

It's a shared exam for all first year electrician schooling (Industrial, commercial and maintenance, etc.)

I haven't learned anything about fire alarms but from what I remember my older brother said all the stuff he did was a common sense thing for his first year schooling.

I just don't want the $175 to go to waste.

Unfortunately I don't have information to assist, it has been 30 years since I was in trade school... my question is why to you want to skip it? I have had a few apprentices over the years that could have skipped basic or other levels and I encouraged them to take the training. They were thankful in the end. There is a lot more to trade school then just the instructional settings.

I'm living pay cheque to pay cheque (I ran up some debt when I was younger). I can't afford to go to school for 40 days.

Registration is 400 dollars, plus parking at the school, plus all the books they want you to purchase for the course.

Luckily, one of the electricians I have worked for works at the school (ironically enough, teaching first and second year programs part time) so he said he could give me a brief over view of what the test is gonna have to make sure it's the right choice.

I did the basic exemption and went to school for intermediate and advanced. The test was not very hard, I hadn't looked at a code book for more than 2 minutes in the truck. As long as you can look through the code book and find things at a reasonable pace you'll probably be fine. There were a few basic circuits to solve and some math but nothing extreme. I had done 2 years of college prior to starting my apprenticeship and think that helped. But really I don't feel I missed out on anything by not going to basic. Most of the questions were very... basic, and with the amount of on the job you've had you should probably know most answers without searching the code book.

Ok I get that. I guess I expect there to be some support from the employer when it comes to education and training. I am a grinder about a lot of things, but if I can spend money on education and training for the guys I will.

At my place, we have the books at the shop from previous apprentices and we sponsor the $400 if they pass the course. If we need to update the books, I just purchase the newest ones. I consider it the cost of doing business.

Regardless of your situation, if you can see your way clear I would still recommend it.

Our hall has many incentives for apprentices, some free books, deals on other books, book borrowing, cover the tuition after they pass etc.

When I started I was not in the union and my employer loaned me the $ for tuition. We didn’t have grants back then either.

It was different when I went. No tuition, books were provided, you got a training bonus on top of pogy and gave you allowance for driving and parking.

It was four terms back then, three mandatory being Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. One optional term called Post-Advanced.

We also had the option of going on Saturdays for a class in Home Automation, Robotics or a couple of other things.

The first time I went there was no tuition either. Only started paying in intermediate. I also got an interest free tool loan from the government that I used for books.
