Use a halo no bracket can. Even if its a little short, it will still work fine.

H7ICTNB. Same thing as a regular 6" can, but without the bracket for the socket. You use a trim that the socket snaps into, i.e. HAL 30WAT.

Why can't you just lower this ^ type of can down as far as you need and put 3 pointy screws in to hold it in place?

I can, i'm just being anal about due to an archy, lighting lady, and ahj that are on me like ugly on an ape 220/1

I would worry that the clips wouldn't handle the depth or you couldn't get the housing into place because of the thickness of the material.
