Hello everyone,

I need help to understand a term related to electricity (I think).
I'm a French student and as part of my degree, I'm translating a short story.
In that short story, two characters are building a house. Here is the passage I'm not sure I understand:
"I helped him plot circuits and measured sockets against my hammer"
Does it make sense to any of you to measure sockets against your hammer?

Thanks for reading this =)

I think what that means is when installing electrical boxes in a new house, wall or room, some guys use their framing hammer as the height gauge. You stand the hammer on the floor against the wall stud, and the top of the hammer would equal the top of the box.

Some electricians will use their hammer by standing it up against a wall and marking the wall for the height of their electrical boxes,so that they're all the same height.

Don't they call power outlets sockets in Europe?

..."I helped him plot circuits and measured sockets against my hammer"..
If I may, "I helped him route circuits and measured the socket's height off the top my hammer"

I removed "againest".
